About this activity

Where is it

Lake Bolsena, the fifth largest lake in Italy, is located in northern Lazio in the heart of Tuscia, bordering Umbria and Tuscany. This splendid elliptical lake is located in the main caldera of the Vulsinio volcanic complex, a place rich in history and natural beauty that attracts visitors from all over the world.

Origins and History

Lake Bolsena is the largest volcanic lake in Europe. Its formation dates back to the collapse of the Vulsinio volcanic complex approximately 400,000 years ago. Following intense eruptions, the volcanic structure collapsed, forming a large caldera that gradually filled with water over time. The lake covers an area of 114.5 km², with a perimeter of 43 km and a maximum depth of 151 meters. The lake is primarily fed by rainwater, springs, and small streams, and it features an irregular bottom rich in thermal and mineral springs.

What to Expect

The Lake Bolsena offers a breathtaking panorama with its azure waters, the two islands of Bisentina and Martana, and lush Mediterranean vegetation. It’s an ideal place for those who love nature, history, and relaxation.

Bisentina Island: This beautiful island is an oasis of peace and beauty, rich in Mediterranean vegetation and history. There are seven small oratories surrounding the island, along with a larger church and a convent in the southern part.
Martana Island: Famous for having been the place of imprisonment of Queen Amalasunta, this island is shrouded in mystery and legend.

The Countries and What to See

The countries bordering the shores of the lake are:

  • Bolsena: The city that gave its name to the lake is rich in history and culture. Bolsena is famous for its churches, including the Basilica of Santa Cristina, and for the Monaldeschi della Cervara Castle.
  • Montefiascone: Offers the best overall view of the lake. It is famous for the Est! Est!! Est!!! wine and for the Rocca dei Papi, an ancient papal residence.
  • Marta: A small fishing village. Not to be missed are the Clock Tower and the traditional fishing boats.
  • Capodimonte: Located on a promontory jutting out into the lake, Capodimonte is a fascinating place with its Farnese castle.
  • Valentano: It offers a wide, commanding view over the lake basin and houses the Museum of Prehistory of Tuscia and the Farnese Fortress.
