Vitorchiano

Vitorchiano

Located in the province of Viterbo, in the Lazio region, Vitorchiano is a medieval village perched on a peperino cliff, a local volcanic stone, offering breathtaking views over the Tiber Valley. With its thousand-year-old history, cobbled streets, and a timeless atmosphere, Vitorchiano is a must-visit destination for lovers of culture, nature, and fine cuisine.

A Dive into History

The origins of Vitorchiano date back to the Etruscan era, but the village reached its peak during the Middle Ages. Protected by imposing walls and watchtowers, Vitorchiano still maintains a perfect balance between architecture and landscape.
As you stroll through its streets, you can admire ancient palaces, frescoed churches, and historic fountains, each with its own story to tell. Among the most remarkable sites are the Church of the Holy Trinity, featuring a Romanesque bell tower, and the Town Hall, which houses original frescoes and furnishings.

The Moai of Vitorchiano: A Unique Attraction

One of the most fascinating aspects of Vitorchiano is the presence of an authentic Moai, a monolithic sculpture typical of Easter Island. This Moai was created in 1990 by a delegation of sculptors from the island, using local peperino stone. It is the only Moai in the world outside of Easter Island to have been crafted using traditional techniques. This masterpiece has become a symbol of the village, attracting visitors from all over the world.

Nature and Surroundings

Vitorchiano is not only rich in history and culture but also serves as an excellent starting point for exploring the surrounding natural beauty. Just a few kilometers away, you can visit the stunning Chia Waterfalls and the Monte Casoli Nature Reserve, perfect for hiking and picnicking. Trekking enthusiasts can venture along scenic trails leading to Etruscan necropolises or head towards Lake Vico, a tranquil oasis surrounded by lush greenery.

How to Reach Vitorchiano

The village is easily accessible from Rome in about an hour and a half by car, following the A1 highway and exiting at Orte. From there, a short drive through the scenic roads of Tuscia will lead you to your destination. Alternatively, you can take a train to Orte station and then continue with a local bus.
