Latera

Latera

Nestled in the lush forests of the Volsini Mountains, on the border between Lazio and Tuscany, lies an authentic medieval gem: Latera. This enchanting village, perched on a hill overlooking a valley of volcanic origin, offers visitors a unique experience where history, nature, and traditions blend in perfect harmony.

The name “Latera” comes from the Latin “latere”, which means “to hide”. And indeed, this small village seems to play hide-and-seek with travelers, concealed as it is among dense forests that protect and hide it from less attentive eyes. But once discovered, Latera reveals all its beauty and timeless charm.

The history of Latera has its roots in a distant past. Archaeological findings testify to human presence in this area since 5000 BC, but it was in the Middle Ages that the village took on the form we can still admire today. Walking through its cobblestone streets, among ancient walls and stone buildings, one finds oneself catapulted into a distant era, where time seems to have stood still.

Located just a few kilometers from Lake Bolsena, Latera offers glimpses of rare beauty. From the village, one can admire breathtaking views of Lake Bolsena and the nearby Lake Mezzano. The town sits within the Latera Caldera, a volcanic formation of great geological interest, which is home to rare and unusual species of flora and fauna, making the area a paradise for nature lovers and hikers.

Latera is not only a delight for the eyes but also for the palate. The village is famous for two gastronomic events that attract visitors from all over the region:

The Sagra del Pizzicotto: a festival dedicated to the typical pasta made from bread dough and cooked in water, a simple dish that is rich in flavor and tradition.

The Sagra del Marrone di Latera: an autumn event that celebrates one of the region’s finest products, the chestnut, which is the star of numerous traditional recipes.
