Tuscania

Tuscania

Nestled between the Tyrrhenian Sea, Lake Bolsena, and the gentle hills of Tuscia, Tuscania is a village in Lazio that offers a unique combination of ancient history, vibrant traditions, and breathtaking landscapes. Just a few kilometers from Viterbo, this town is the ideal destination for those seeking a vacation filled with culture, nature, and delicious food.

Tuscania is a city with deep roots that reach back to the Bronze Age, yet it began to truly flourish with the arrival of the Etruscans. Tuscania’s importance as a commercial and religious center grew quickly due to its strategic location and control over the Marta Valley. Strolling through its streets, one cannot help but admire the intertwining of Etruscan, Roman, and medieval influences evident in the archaeological remains and historic buildings.

According to legend, the city was founded by Ascanius, son of Aeneas, or by Tusco, son of Hercules, and these legendary origins can be felt in every corner of the historic center, well-preserved despite the scars of the past, such as the devastating earthquake of 1971. Today, Tuscania is a place where the charm of ancient times is palpable, from the Etruscan necropolises to the imposing Romanesque churches of San Pietro and Santa Maria Maggiore, true symbols of the city.

The Tor di Lavello Park, with its breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside, is perfect for a relaxing stroll after a visit to the Archaeological Museum. Here, you can explore the richness of Tuscania’s Etruscan and Roman past, admiring artifacts unearthed from nearby necropolises.

But it’s not just history. The spirit of Tuscania also lives in its cultural and religious events, such as the Good Friday Processions and the Feast of Our Lady of the Snow, which each year engage the entire community and attract visitors from all over the region.

For food lovers, Tuscania is a true paradise. The local cuisine is authentic and rich in genuine flavors, deeply rooted in peasant traditions. Among the typical products, extra virgin olive oil, local wines, and delicacies such as porcini mushrooms and snails stand out. Gastronomic events like the Frittella Festival and the Baccalà Festival are not to be missed, offering perfect opportunities to savor traditional cuisine in a festive and convivial atmosphere.

Tuscania also offers plenty for nature lovers. The Tuscania Nature Reserve is the perfect place for hiking and outdoor walks, where you can discover the local flora and fauna. Additionally, at the end of May, horse enthusiasts cannot miss Nitriti a Primavera, an event dedicated to the Maremma and Tolfa horses, symbols of local tradition. The spectacular equestrian demonstrations make this event one of the most anticipated of the season.
