Bisentina Island, the larger of the two islands in Lake Bolsena, is located in the western part of the lake, about 3 km from the southern shore near the town of Capodimonte, in the heart of Tuscia. This small natural paradise, spanning 17 hectares, is a fascinating destination rich in history.
The island’s name derives from Bisentium, an ancient settlement that arose during the late Bronze Age. Over the centuries, Bisentina Island has undergone multiple historical vicissitudes. During the 9th century, it became a safe refuge for the inhabitants of coastal villages during barbarian incursions. It then became the residence of Franciscan friars who built the main structures, and during the papal period, it also became a summer residence for popes. Subsequently, it passed under the control of the powerful Farnese family, who left a significant architectural and cultural imprint on the island. ct. With the Del Drago family and thanks to Prince Giovanni, aesthetic improvements were made, such as the Italian garden, and it was opened to the public for the first time. After his death, it was abandoned and closed. Since 2017, the island has belonged to the Rovati family, who have launched an ambitious conservation restoration project.
Bisentina Island is famous for its seven chapels, built between the 15th and 16th centuries by the Observant Friars Minor. Here’s an overview of the main structures:
Bisentina Island is a true natural paradise, with impressive biodiversity that includes 230 botanical species. Its dense holm oak woods, Italian gardens, and centuries-old olive trees offer breathtaking views and shelter for numerous wild animals.
According to local legend, Bisentina Island is said to be one of the portals to the legendary underground realm of Agartha, a world inhabited by an evolved and peaceful civilization. This story contributes to the mystical charm of the island, which has also been a film set, as in Carlo Verdone’s movie “Stasera a casa di Alice”.
Although the island is private and not always open to the public, it is possible to visit by purchasing a ticket for a total of €45, which includes a tour guide and boat transportation. You can also admire it up close by sailing near it with the tourist boats from Bolsena and Capodimonte.
