Bracciano

Bracciano

Bracciano, nestled among the gentle Lazio hills about 40 kilometers from Rome, is a medieval village that captivates visitors with its rich history and natural beauty. The town rises majestically on the shores of Lake Bracciano, offering breathtaking views and an atmosphere steeped in history and culture.

History of Bracciano

The origins of Bracciano date back to the medieval period when the village developed around a watchtower built in the 10th century to defend against Saracen raids. Over the centuries, control of the area passed through various noble families, including the Prefetti di Vico and the Orsini. It was under the Orsini that, in 1470, construction began on the majestic Orsini-Odescalchi Castle, which was completed in 1485. This imposing fortress became a symbol of the family’s power and a hub of political and cultural life at the time. In 1696, the castle and the Duchy of Bracciano were acquired by the Odescalchi family, who still own it today.
